In 2011 Lynchburg was ranked #49 by Forbes for best places for business and careers and placed it above all other metros with the exception of Washington D.C.-Arlington, Lynchburg's position on the list placed it above all other metros in Virginia, making the city the No. 2 "hot hub" in the state. Milken Institute ranked the Lynchburg area No. 54 overall in it's "Best Performing Cities Index" for job growth, salary increases, and expansion of high-tech industries. Lynchburg and Northern Virginia were the only metro areas in the state to make the top 100.
