In 2010 Lynchburg was ranked #28 by Forbes for best places for business and careers and placed it above all other metros in the state making Lynchburg #1 in Virginia. Compared to the rest of the country, Lynchburg’s cost of living ranked #34. The unemployment rate generally tracks more than a percentage point below the national average, and the Lynchburg region had the highest job growth rate in the state. Careers in healthcare; professional, scientific, technical services; accommodation and food service; education; and wholesale trade were the highest according to Richmond's Mangum Institute.
