Lynchburg schools provide local students with a variety of experiences ranging from technical-based programs to arts-centered activities. Area schools are recognized for achievements in academics, athletics, arts and alternative education. The school system molds future leaders like Lynchburg native and Heritage High School graduate Leland Melvin. Melvin was selected to fly in the first space shuttle missions in 2008.

Private schools in the area complement, rather than challenge the public schools. With so many superior educational facilities parents can’t go wrong when choosing a school district in which to settle.

Glass and Heritage high schools made Newsweek’s competitive list of the nation’s top 1,300 public high schools. The schools’ respective rankings of 604 and 850 were based on a combination of Advanced Placement examinations and graduation rates.
