Dedicated in 2008, the new Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center brings comprehensive cancer treatment services all under one roof.

"This center represents 75,000-square-feet of hope for the thousands of patients who will come through these doors seeking treatment and healing," said George W. Dawson, Centra president and CEO. "The Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center stands as a visible symbol of our commitment to provide quality care to our region."

Centra earned national recognition with a full accreditation with commendation for its cancer services from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer in 2008.

Centra's Services

Centra Lynchburg General Hospital is home to Centra Stroobants Heart Center, a national benchmark facility for cardiac care. Each year heart center specialists perform more than 5,000 major cardiac procedures. Centra Lynchburg General, a Level II Trauma Center, also offers emergency and critical care services, orthopaedic services including Joint Camp, neurology and neurosurgery, diabetes/renal services, pulmonary care and an outpatient surgery center.

Three miles away is Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital, home to the area's women and children's services, including the region's neonatal intensive care unit. Additional services provided at Centra Virginia Baptist include skilled care and rehabilitation services, mental health services and ambulatory surgery. Centra Virginia Baptist also provides specialty services, including the Heartburn Treatment Center, the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, the Sleep Disorders Center and the Center for Pain Management. In addition to these two hospitals, Centra also is affiliated with Centra SouthsideCommunity Hospital in Farmville, and operates Bedford Memorial Hospital in Bedford in partnership with Carilion.

Lynchburg residents have access to many of the best treatment options available anywhere. And the field of ophthalmology offers a good example. Several established local practices provide the very latest medical and surgical eye care. Piedmont Eye Center, central Virginia's only full-time multi-specialist ophthalmology practice, is equipped to serve the advanced eye care needs of children, adults and seniors.

Lynchburg's ambulance service is provided through the city's fire department, and the Lynchburg Life Saving Crew, the second oldest volunteer squad in the nation, serves as backup and helps with search and rescue efforts.

Central Virginia also has a medical helicopter service, MedFlight III, with Centra supplying the staff to transport accident victims to area trauma centers.
