Boasting a mild climate and plethora of recreational opportunities, retirees find tranquility in Central Virginia
When contemplating a move to a new area, retirees take a lot into consideration— climate, the area’s beauty, low taxes, recreational activities and a good health care system are a few priorities.
To meet the varying needs of retirees, the Lynchburg area offers a variety of living options—from free-standing one-story homes in low maintenance neighborhoods to assisted living communities. Recreational opportunities abound including: gatherings at local art galleries, organized game days and shopping trips, viewings of local plays, and senior sports leagues. The Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Senior Adult Program has activities that include music, special luncheons, seasonal celebrations, outdoor games, workshops, table games, billiards, blood pressure screening and more.

Retirement for some senior citizens involves giving back to the community by helping the Greater Lynchburg Habitat For Humanity since 1988 build over 264 homes and counting.

The chance to give back to the area is also available in the form of various service activities like Habitat for Humanity, the United Way, the American Red Cross, Amazement Square Children’s Museum and area humane societies. Factor in that Lynchburg is home to the nationally ranked Centra Health Stroobants Heart Center of Virginia, and one can see why Central Virginia is a prime location for those looking to spend their retirement years in a new environment. A complete list of member retirement communities, independent, assisted living and retirement assistance are located in the Resource Directory in the back of this publication.
